About the 12-hour pediatric first aid course:
Childcare Help pediatric first aid course for childminders is designed for early years workers caring for young children in the absence of their parents and is appropriate to the age of the children that, as a childminder, you will be caring for. This reassures parents that they are complying with standards set out by OFSTED and the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and are providing a safe and caring environment for their children, and are set up and equipped for emergencies. The pediatric first aid course gives you the skills and hands-on learning, via resuscitation dummies and equipment to practice on different sizes and ages of baby, infant, and child to comply with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and OFSTED compliant requirements.
Before registering with OFSTED, childminders are required to have completed a 12-hour pediatric first aid (PFA) course that is OFSTED compliant and fits the regulations set out by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
It is a requirement that all childminders and childminder assistants complete a full 12-hour pediatric first aid (PFA) course before they can be included in the required adult: child ratios in early years setting. By completing the pediatric first aid course you will obtain an OFSTED compliant certification and will be able to operate within the required OFSTED ratios based on each age range.
Our 12-hour pediatric first aid course, which is compiled of 6 hours of hands-on training with one of our fully qualified pediatric first aid trainers, and then another 6 hours online, is fully OFSTED compliant for the Early Years and Childcare Registers, and suitable for childminders, nannies and nursery practitioners.
Childminders who care for children who are under the age of 16, must have completed a pediatric first aid (PFA) course, and will only be Early Years Foundation Stage and OFSTED compliant once certification has been issued.
Pediatric First Aid Course:
Children who are developing their gross motor skills through crawling, walking, and climbing, are very likely to receive small bumps, bruises and cuts. As a childminder, knowing what to do in these situations should be a part of your everyday practice, and having an up-to-date pediatric first aid course, will prove your understanding and knowledge.
In the event of a much bigger accident happening, we hope you will never have to use the pediatric first aid skills that you learn from the 12 hours pediatric First Aid course for childminders, but unfortunately, these situations can happen and be prepared and knowing exactly what to do in that situation is the best practice that you can provide as a childminder.
They are curious about the world around them and will explore in many ways, including putting things in their mouth. To have the basic skills that a pediatric first aid course can offer, will not only give the parents reassurance that you are capable of keeping the children safe, but will also improve your practice to be able to assess risks, provide a safe environment, and know exactly what to do in an emergency where first aid may be required. When it comes to children, you should be prepared for any kind of emergency. Unfortunately, small children do not understand risks, and so it is down to the adult to risk assessment for them.
OFSTED and Early Years Foundation Stage Framework:
Pediatric first aid courses for childminders should be taken face-to-face and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidelines, whereby childminders need to:
• Be able to assess an emergency and prioritize what action to take
This skill is of utmost importance and will set the pace for the rest of the pediatric first aid course, by emphasizing the importance of assessing each emergency that may arise in your childminder setting. It is from learning this procedure that you will then be able to use your skills to deal with any emergency.
You will learn how to
• Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
• Help a baby or child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
• Help a baby or child who is having a seizure
• Help a baby or child who is choking
• Help a baby or child who is bleeding
• Help a baby or child who is suffering from shock caused by severe blood loss (hypovolemic shock)
Developing Skills and Opportunities:
To develop these skills, childminders are given plenty of opportunities to practice their skills within our pediatric first aid course and are made to feel comfortable and confident in all pediatric first aid training given.
It is important to complete a full 12 hour OFSTED compliant pediatric first aid course as in addition to the above criteria, you will also learn how to:
1. Help a baby or child who is suffering from anaphylactic shock
2. Help a baby or child who has had an electric shock
3. Help a baby or child who has burns or scalds
4. Help a baby or child who has a suspected fracture
5. Help a baby or child with head, neck, or back injuries
6. Help a baby or child who is suspected of being poisoned
7. Help a baby or child with a foreign body in eyes, ears, or nose
8. Help a baby or child with an eye injury
9. Help a baby or child with a bite or sting
10. Help a baby or child who is suffering from the effects of extreme heat or cold
11. Help a baby or child having: a diabetic emergency; an asthma attack; an allergic reaction; meningitis; and/or febrile convulsions
Understand the role and responsibilities of the pediatric first aider (including appropriate contents of a first aid box and the need for recording accidents and incidents)
The emphasis of all of these is to ‘help’ a baby or child in these areas of pediatric first aid. Being an OFSTED compliant childminder requires you to understand and feel confident in all of these areas, and Childcare Help pediatric first aid course covers all of these, as well as a safe, educational environment to develop these skills.
Pediatric First Aid Requirements:
All of these topics are compulsory and cover all the set requirements by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and are OFSTED compliant for childminder registration.
During your Childcare Help face-to-face pediatric first aid course, adequate resuscitation and other equipment are provided for your training to adhere to the OFSTED and the Early Years Foundation Stage standards. It is by using this equipment, including baby and junior resuscitation models, where the hands-on learning will provide you with confidence and reassurance. The pediatric first aid (PFA) course you are being taught should give all trainees the ability to practice and demonstrate techniques.

Following the 12-hour pediatric first aid PFA training, an assessment of competence leads to the award of our pediatric first aid for childminders certificate.

As an OFSTED compliant childminder or childminders assistant, you must understand the role that you play with pediatric first aid within your setting. OFSTED will also require a first aid box to be easily accessed for emergencies, as well as up-to-date and precise record keeping. Renewal of the course:
Childminders should consider whether they undertake annual pediatric first aid refresher training, which can be of 6 hours (emergency first aid) or the full 12-hour pediatric first aid (PFA) course during any three year certification period, to help maintain basic skills and keep up to date with any changes to pediatric first aid (PFA) procedures. This way all information stays refreshed and relevant, as well as your confidence and the procedures you need to put into place within your early years setting to remain OFSTED compliant.
All childminders, to be OFSTED compliant, must renew their pediatric first aid qualification every 3 years and display their certificate for parents and OFSTED inspectors to see. This is a requirement set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework and complies with OFSTED requirements and registration.
It is suggested to book and renew your pediatric first aid (PFA) course with plenty of time before your certification runs out. Keeping on top of your certification, as well as that of your childminding assistants, and making sure you comply with the OFSTED requirement of renewing your pediatric first aid course every 3 years, is your responsibility. Don’t delay your training.
